Words of Gratitude from the Team at Adirondack Orthodontics
As the holiday season gets busier, we want to take a moment to slow down and thank all of our patients, family members, friends, and team members for brightening our lives and allowing us to do what we do best!
In 2022, we’ve had so much to be thankful for, starting with the successful opening of our sixth location! We’re now better able to serve our patients in the Capital Region from offices in Albany, Clifton Park, East Greenbush, Glens Falls, Latham, and Schenectady.
However, our success across our six locations would be impossible without teamwork and camaraderie – and we’re thankful that we have those in spades. “I’m thankful to have a team that is willing to work with each other even when it gets stressful here,” one of our team members shared. “I love that people help when they can!” We’re thankful for our compassionate doctors, staff members, and dental assistants for helping us transform over 10,000 smiles.
We’re also so grateful that our patients nominated us in the Times Union’s Best Of contest for the third consecutive year. This year, we won the award for Best Orthodontist by more than 4,000 votes. Thank you to our patients, past and present, who voted for us, and thank you to those who participated in our review contest and had wonderful things to say about their experience with Adirondack Orthodontics.
Finally, we’re thankful to be able to support our community by not just offering the finest orthodontic services but by sponsoring local sports teams and travel clubs, including RoBovines FTC Team #6955 with Saratoga County 4-H, Sorensco Babe Ruth Baseball, Shenendehowa High School Drama Club, Guilderland Bulldogs Travel Baseball Team (12U), and Guilderland Wolfpack Travel Softball. We believe in investing in the community where we work, and we’re proud to support these local groups.
Whether you’re thankful for your dental health, family and friends, or the simple beauty of changing leaves, we’re grateful to be part of your life. And, from our family to yours, we hope this inspires you to consider everything you’re thankful for this holiday season.
Tips on Proper Dental Care
Dental hygiene is essential for keeping your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy, especially when you’re undergoing orthodontic treatment. October is Dental Hygiene Month, and we want to remind all our patients about the importance of proper teeth care, whether they have braces or aligners.
Take a look below at some tips on caring for your teeth, gums, braces, and aligners. In addition, learn more about maintaining a happy, healthy smile, and get in touch with our team if you have any questions about your dental hygiene!
How to Care for Your Teeth & Braces
If you have braces, you should be flossing once a day and brushing your teeth after every meal. Remember to brush the outside, inside, and crowns of your teeth in a circular motion, paying particular attention to the brackets on your teeth. You should also brush your gums, tongue, and cheeks. When flossing, remember to use a “C” shape to get all the areas around your gums. Floss threaders can help you get around wires and brackets, and rinsing your mouth can help loosen food particles.
The kit we provided for you at the start of your treatment should help, but we always welcome the chance to discuss what tools work best for taking care of your teeth when you have braces. Feel free to reach out to our team with any additional questions you may have!
How to Care for Your Aligners
Unlike braces, aligners can be taken off for eating, drinking, and brushing your teeth. Even though you remove your aligners for these activities, you need to care for your aligners to ensure they last and to protect the health of your teeth and gums. We recommend gently brushing your aligners using toothpaste and cool water every time you remove them. And, of course, you should be brushing and flossing your teeth as recommended above.
Adirondack Orthodontics and Your Dental Hygiene
At Adirondack Orthodontics, we want to help our patients achieve and preserve straight, healthy smiles for a lifetime. Keeping these dental care tips in mind during and after your treatment will help you reach the smile of your dreams! If you have any further questions about oral hygiene techniques, please call or text your nearest location, or request an appointment here.
How Orthodontics & Gum Health Go Hand in Hand
September is National Gum Care Month, so we would like to take a minute to reiterate the importance of gum health and how vital it is to properly care for your gums before, throughout, and beyond your orthodontic treatment.
The Dangers of Poor Gum Care
When you don’t follow a proper brushing and flossing regimen, the consequences can range from painful and inconvenient to catastrophic. As plaque and tartar build up at the base of your teeth, your gums can be irritated, leading to gingivitis. Painful and unpleasant, gingivitis is characterized by swollen, inflamed, bleeding gums and bad breath. And if gingivitis isn’t addressed, periodontitis, a serious gum disease, can develop. According to the CDC, “47.2% of adults aged 30 years and older have some form of periodontal disease.” Since periodontal diseases can cause bone and tooth loss, proper gum care is essential.
The Relationship Between Gum Health & Orthodontics
Gum care is important for people of all ages, regardless of whether they are currently straightening their teeth. However, healthy gums are essential for orthodontics because the treatment depends on strong bones and teeth. During treatment, pressure is put on the teeth and gums as the teeth are slowly moved into place. If gum decay isn’t addressed before treatment, this process can actually lead to more damage.
Fortunately, Adirondack Orthodontics can help you understand how to care for your teeth and gums – before, during, and after your orthodontic treatment.
The Right Gum Care Routine
If you’ve already started your orthodontic journey, you have likely already learned from our team members how to keep your mouth healthy throughout your treatment. Whether or not you are currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, you should follow the same rules: brush your teeth after eating and floss daily to remove food and prevent plaque buildup.
At Adirondack Orthodontics, we are always here to act as a resource for our patients. If you would like to find out if you’re the right candidate for orthodontic treatment or learn more about how you can take care of your gums, schedule an appointment at your nearest location. We look forward to helping you achieve a beautiful, healthy smile. Call or text us today!

How a Better Smile Improves Confidence
Each year, over 9,000,000 individuals choose to improve their oral health with orthodontic treatment. Invisalign alone, one of the most popular options on the market, has been implemented by over 12 million people seeking straighter, more beautiful smiles. We all know some of the health benefits of achieving a straight smile, but what else can your Instagram-ready smile achieve for you?
Take a look below at the ways that having a straighter smile can benefit you now and far in the future!
A straighter smile increases confidence.
While misaligned teeth may have you feeling a little camera-shy, a straightened smile can tackle your insecurities about how your teeth look. Confidence comes from within, but how you look can contribute to how you feel.
When you feel more confident, you tend to shine! Whether you are making memories that last a lifetime at prom or your wedding, or you are taking the next steps toward your future with a job interview, having your ideal smile can be the boost you need.
According to a study completed by Invisalign, 92% of people felt more confident after achieving straightened teeth. In fact, as many as 80% of people surveyed said that they had the confidence to do something they had never done before. What could you do with the confidence a straighter smile would bring you?
A straighter smile helps you speak clearly.
You may have already thought about the look of your smile, but have you thought about the impact it might be having on the way you speak? A straightened smile can help you form your words clearly and correctly. Knowing that misaligned teeth won’t get in the way of your speech can give you the confidence to speak in a way that compels others to listen to what you have to say.
A straighter smile can be permanent.
When properly cared for, a straight smile can last the rest of your life. If you’re young, your investment in the health of your teeth can follow you through education and your career. Just as importantly, it can help give you confidence in your personal life and in anything that you choose to do.

Our 6th office opens at Dr. DeLuke’s former practice.
Dr. Mike DeLuke of DeLuke Orthodontics knew he wanted to be a dentist at age 13, fell in love with orthodontics in dental school, and has been transforming lives at his Schenectady office building for nearly 20 years. Dr. DeLuke will be retiring from his clinical practice this summer, potentially creating a significant void in orthodontic services in the Schenectady area.
But Dr. Sergey Berenshteyn of Adirondack Orthodontics is opening a sixth branch at Dr. DeLuke’s former location, continuing the legacy of affordable, convenient, and customized care. Having helped Schenectady smile for many years, Dr. DeLuke took a moment to reflect on his mission, what he’s learned, and his plans. Let’s take a look at what he had to say!
How’d you fall in love with orthodontics?
Even after almost 20 years, I remain humbled by the power to deliver a smile that fills a person with confidence, lights up a room, and, nowadays, looks great on social media! I love when previous patients send me pictures of their major life events with a note saying how much they love their teeth and their smile.
Beyond appearances, we help young faces grow properly, to accommodate the adult teeth, and help them breathe through their nose instead of through their mouth. This is often overlooked but it provides a tremendous benefit to overall health.
I do this using only braces and wires (not expanders or headgear) when patients are 7-9 years old. At that age, the bones of the face are super-pliable so very light forces can achieve tremendous results. In addition, it almost always prevents the need to extract adult teeth which is awesome.
What’s been different about your practice and why?
I’ve specialized in treating younger patients with less invasive techniques than has traditionally been done. Using low-radiation 3D imaging along with a thorough clinical exam, I can detect underlying issues in facial growth and airway development. This allows me to both make the appropriate referral(s) to the ENT and/or allergist and, if indicated, use my minimally invasive braces and wires technique to normalize the growth of the jaws and face. The resulting transformation is mind-blowing. It dramatically improves the patient’s quality of life.
What’s next for you?
I’m starting DeLuke Orthodontic Coaching, with the mission of advancing the specialty, offering clinical and practice management courses, blogs, podcasts, and monthly case reviews to my orthodontic colleagues. Minimally invasive Phase I/Interceptive treatments are not being taught to young docs or performed by older docs. It will be an uphill climb to convince my colleagues to change their approach, but I’m ready and I’m super excited to share what I have learned.
Can past patients still get in touch?
I will be keeping my practice email, smiles@delukeortho.com, open indefinitely, and I’m working with a third-party lab to make retainers for patients who have had a previous digital scan taken at my office. If a previous patient needs new retainers they can send us an email and we will instruct you regarding how to proceed.
I am super excited for Dr. Berenshteyn and his associates to be moving into my facility! I have put my heart and soul into the Union Street property to customize it as an orthodontic office and I’m thrilled that it’s going to remain one. I’m also very happy for the community. One concern I had in retiring was the void in orthodontic services in Schenectady County that would result, so it’s great that Adirondack Ortho is going to come in and fill that void.
Additional Info About the Schenectady Location

How Orthodontics Improve Oral Health
June is Oral Health Month and we want to take a moment to reflect on the positive changes that orthodontics can have on your oral health. Unhealthy decisions can have a domino effect, but so can healthy ones. When you choose to invest in your oral health, you’re investing in your overall well-being. Below, find a list of ways that orthodontics can improve your overall health and keep you smiling for years to come!
Prevent Tooth Decay
Cavities, tooth decay, and other issues will be noticed and addressed earlier if you are undergoing orthodontic treatment. Even better, straighter teeth are less likely to trap food between them, as straight teeth are easier to floss and brush. This helps to stop tooth decay at the source.
Minimize Worn, Chipped Teeth
Teeth need to be properly aligned to correctly chew and bite down. An underbite, an overbite, or generally misaligned teeth can cause teeth to wear down on the edges, resulting in permanent damage. Orthodontic treatment will align teeth and repair the way you bite, preventing dangerous wear to your teeth.
Treat Painful Jaw Disorders
Misaligned teeth can have a huge impact on the surrounding jaw. Orthodontic treatment can move teeth to their proper places, treating or preventing painful issues like TMJ.
Improve Overall Health
The health of your teeth is directly connected to the health of the rest of your body. Periodontal (gum) disease and other serious conditions can result in problems for your immune system. Fortunately, orthodontic treatment can prevent conditions like these, improving your overall health.

The theme of this campaign aligns closely with our philosophy here at Adirondack Orthodontics: “Everyone deserves a healthy smile.” We hope you join us in celebrating this month and promoting the value of a healthy smile. Take a look at some of the key messages we’ll be sharing during National Smile Month as well as ways we work to create a world where everyone has a healthy smile.
Keys to Better Oral Health
At Adirondack Orthodontics, we hope to equip our patients with both the orthodontic treatment they need and the skills to take care of their mouths and smiles for the long haul. We are always seeking ways to help educate our patients and connect them with the resources they need to achieve healthy, beautiful smiles. We encourage you to read through our resources page to find out how to care for your Invisalign aligners or braces and to learn what’s new at Adirondack Orthodontics.
National Smile Month encourages the same, offering some key tips for improving oral health. These tips include brushing your teeth twice a day (once during the day and once at night) with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning between your teeth by flossing once a day. In addition, limit your consumption of sugary foods and drinks (check out this list of foods to avoid!). We recommend being evaluated by an orthodontist by age 7, learn about the benefits of early treatment here! Last, but not least, visit a dentist regularly!
If you need any more information on how to care for your oral health, don’t hesitate to contact our team, or visit our resources page, where you can find answers to many frequently asked questions!
Supporting Patients in the Capital Region & Beyond
The team at Adirondack Orthodontics believes that everyone deserves a healthy smile. In fact, we have teamed up with two local teens to help make braces even more accessible to families in the Capital Region. Sam and Ben Sosnovsky from Guilderland, NY, were concerned about their teeth and proper dental care from a young age. The twins, at age 12, reached out to Adirondack Orthodontics to start the process of getting their very best smiles.
Both Sam and Ben were extremely satisfied with their smile results and felt that getting their braces and having their dental work completed prior to high school positively impacted their lives. Wanting others to have the same experience, they then committed to passing their happiness along. By working multiple jobs and saving money, they collected $4,000 to donate to under-privileged area residents who needed dental care but were otherwise unable to afford it.
The twins reached out to Adirondack Orthodontics to express their passion and dedication to help. Dr. B, impressed by the young men, decided to match their earnings and help distribute it to deserving residents in the Capital Region and beyond. Want to know more? Check out the full article here!
Just like Sam and Ben, we believe that everyone deserves a healthy smile and we want to do what we can to ensure that happens! We also offer customized, interest-free payment plans and discounts to families in the Capital Region to make sure everyone can achieve the smile they deserve. If anything is standing in the way of your or your child’s orthodontic treatment, please reach out to us. We will work with you to provide you with the best care, no matter your financial situation.
Help Us Celebrate National Smile Month
We would love your help celebrating National Smile Month in 2022! Make sure you put your oral health first by following the care tips above. Just as importantly, spread the word to your family and friends about the care you’ve received at Adirondack Orthodontics. How to Protect Your Smile Forever
Once you’ve achieved the smile of your dreams, you’ll want to make sure you can keep it! Brushing and flossing have always been on your daily to-do list, but after finishing your orthodontic treatment, you’ll have something to add to that list: wearing your retainer. Essential for keeping your teeth in the same position, your retainer will be customized to fit your mouth perfectly. Learn more about your options and how Adirondack Orthodontics makes smile protection easy below.
Essix Retainer
Clear and plastic, the Essix retainer resembles Invisalign and is the most common type of retainer. Typically more comfortable than other retainers, the Essix retainer lasts roughly 18 months and should be worn at night. After you finish your orthodontic treatment, we will take a scan of your teeth, and your new retainer will be ready within a few days. This is the type of retainer that we give you at the end of your orthodontic treatment and with the Smile Protection Program.
Hawley Retainer
The Hawley retainer is a classic metal retainer with a colorful bite plate. Less common than the Essix retainer, this type of retainer is issued specifically by doctor recommendation or patient choice. As with the Essix retainer, we will take a scan of your teeth after you finish treatment, and your retainer will be ready within a few days.
Lingual Retainer
A lingual retainer is a thin piece of wire which is glued to the back of the teeth to preserve alignment during the day. Often suggested for patients with crowding or spacing issues, this type of retainer should be combined with the Essix retainer at night and is the best guarantee for long-term retention. These require maintenance or replacement every three to five years.
Smile Protection Program
Make sure you protect your investment in your smile with a retainer. Since retainers typically require replacement after 18 months, your team at Adirondack Orthodontics has a solution to help you maintain your smile: our Smile Protection Program. There are several options you can choose from to get the smile protection that works for you:
Smile Protection Plan Enrollment: $600*
After you enroll, replacement retainers will cost $35/arch and can be shipped to your home! Enhance and protect your smile with our Smile Protection Program plus a bleaching kit for $650.
Second Set of Retainers: $200*
(Your first set is included in the treatment fee.)
Bleaching Kit: $100*
Your bleaching kit can be used with retainers.
Sit Back & Enjoy Your New Smile
Keep the smile that you achieved with help from Adirondack Orthodontics! Whether you need our help replacing a broken retainer or you want to take part in our Smile Protection Program, we will help you protect your investment. Call us today to learn more.
*Terms: As long as patients wear their retainers as prescribed, replacements can just be shipped directly to the patient’s home, no office visit needed. If a patient has not worn retainers properly, requiring a rescan, a $100 rescan fee will be charged. Retainer lifetime: Approximately 18 months.
