A first orthodontic evaluation by age 7 gives our doctors the insight they need to guide your child’s smile. But an early visit doesn’t always mean early treatment. Many children simply need careful observation, while others benefit from Phase 1 interceptive treatment to correct developing problems.
Comprehensive Diagnostic Records
Every child’s first visit includes digital X-rays in addition to a 3D iTero® scan. These images allow our board-certified orthodontists to evaluate:
• Stage of dental development – Are adult teeth forming and erupting on schedule?
• Eruption pathways – Will any teeth become blocked or impacted?
• Skeletal relationship of the jaws – Do the upper and lower jaws grow in harmony, or is early growth modification indicated?
This detailed information helps us decide whether orthodontic care, growth modification, or simple monitoring is appropriate now—or whether treatment can be deferred until a later stage.
Observation: When We Simply Watch and Wait
After a complimentary exam, most children enter our recall program—a schedule of periodic checkups every 6–12 months. During these visits we:
• Monitor jaw growth and tooth eruption
• Track bite development and facial balance
• Review oral habits such as thumb-sucking or tongue thrusting
Regular observation ensures that, if a problem appears, we can treat it at the most effective time.
Early (Phase 1) Treatment: When Acting Now Prevents Bigger Problems
Some conditions require early intervention to avoid more complicated procedures later. We may recommend treatment when we see:
• Severe crowding or blocked-out teeth
• Crossbites, underbites, or open bites that risk jaw asymmetry
• Skeletal growth discrepancies where guiding jaw development can prevent future surgery
• Traumatic bites that damage teeth or gums
• Persistent parafunctional habits that affect bite or speech
Because a child’s bones are still growing, interceptive treatment can gently guide development with expanders, limited braces, or Invisalign® First.
