How Adirondack Orthodontics Monitors Growth for the Best Timing
Not every child who visits us at age 7 will need immediate treatment. In fact, most young patients benefit most from observation—regular checkups that allow our doctors to track growth and intervene only when the time is right.
What Is an Observation Program?
An observation program is a structured schedule of visits every 6–12 months. During these appointments, we carefully monitor:
- Dental development – Using periodic digital X-rays and iTero® 3D scans to see how adult teeth are forming and erupting
- Jaw growth and bite – Watching for crossbites, open bites, deep bites, or developing skeletal discrepancies
- Oral habits – Tracking thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting, or mouth breathing that may affect jaw growth
Because each visit includes updated records, we can detect even subtle changes and recommend treatment at the ideal time—never too early and never too late.
Why Observation Matters
- Prevents unnecessary treatment – Many issues resolve naturally with growth and don’t need early appliances.
- Ensures ideal timing – If concerns like crowding or jaw imbalance appear, we can start Phase 1 treatment before they become complex.
- Gives families confidence – Parents know their child’s smile is being closely watched by specialists.
Your Role as a Parent
You don’t need to track every tooth yourself—we do that for you. But if you notice changes such as early tooth loss, difficulty chewing, or new oral habits, just let us know. Our team will evaluate whether an earlier visit is necessary.
