Traditional metal and clear braces treatment for all ages in New York
Braces are a tried-and-tested orthodontic treatment that offers versatile solutions for various dental issues, from overcrowded teeth to gaps, overbites, and underbites. At Adirondack Orthodontics, we treat children, teens, and adults, emphasizing personalized care for every unique set of teeth.
Metal Braces
Traditional metal braces have become more comfortable and stylish than ever before. Patients can choose colored elastics to add a touch of personal style.
Clear Porcelain Braces
For those seeking a more discreet braces option, our ceramic braces are an excellent choice. These clear braces use tooth-colored brackets that blend with the natural color of your teeth, making them less noticeable.

Braces FAQ
What age can you get Braces?
Children can typically be assessed for braces around age 7, with some cases requiring earlier intervention. While the most common age for getting braces is between 9 and 13 years when permanent teeth have mostly come in, there is no such thing as being too old for orthodontic treatment. We work with many adults who did not have braces as children or who need touch-up treatment years later.
What are the different types of braces?
The two main types of braces are traditional metal braces and clear (ceramic) braces. Invisalign is a braces alternative that uses a series of removable aligners to move teeth into the appropriate position instead of brackets/wires. Each type comes with its own set of advantages.
Do braces hurt?
You may initially experience some discomfort or irritation. During those first few days, you can take a pain reliever and eat softer foods until the tenderness fades. You should not experience long-term pain or irritation when wearing braces.
What can I eat with braces?
You should avoid sticky, hard, and chewy foods that can damage the braces. Instead, opt for soft foods like pasta, bread, soup, yogurt, and soft fruits.
Will wearing braces affect my speech?
Wearing braces may temporarily affect speech patterns in the first few hours.
Can I still play sports with braces?
Yes, you can still play sports while wearing braces. However, it is recommended to wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and braces from injury.
How long do most people have to wear braces?
The duration for wearing braces generally ranges from 1 to 3 years, depending on age, individual dental needs, and the complexity of corrections needed.
How much do braces cost?
This will depend on a variety of factors like the type of braces, complexity of treatment, and your insurance. To get an estimate for your unique situation, contact us to set up a free consultation.
Does insurance cover braces or other orthodontic treatment?
We participate with most insurance providers in the Albany area. You can review the full list here. In addition, we offer discounts and flexible financing plans to ensure treatment is as affordable as possible.
Do I still have to visit my normal dentist?
Yes! Dentists and orthodontists work separately to ensure all areas of your dental health are covered. Continue to see your regular dentist for routine cleanings and checkups to make sure your teeth and gums stay healthy during treatment.
How frequently will I have to visit the orthodontist while in treatment?
We’ll create a customized treatment plan based on your needs. Normally, we suggest visits at 4- to 8-week intervals.
I got braces at a different provider. Can I transfer my treatment to you?
Yes! We are always happy to welcome new patients to our practice, even if they began their orthodontic journey elsewhere.
What happens after treatment is complete? Will I need to wear a retainer?
Yes. Retainers are essential for lifelong success of your orthodontic treatment. Sleeping with your retainer(s) at night will help ensure that your bite and the position of your teeth remain healthy and correct. We offer a cost-savings Smile Protection Program to ensure your straight smile for many years to come.
